Valencia FC made history at the start of the 2023 Alianza de Futbol Tour by becoming champions of the Verizon Copa Alianza tournament in Denver, ending Azteca FC's four-year reign.
The Verizon Copa Alianza featured 30 teams and 600 players and provided an exciting spectacle in its grand final. The Valencia team showcased their quality on the field and claimed the title with a 1-0 victory at the Aurora Sports Park.
Azteca FC has been a frequent contender in the most important tournament for the Hispanic community, having won the last four editions. However, they did not anticipate the surprise from Valencia this time around.
Valencia began their journey to the title in Group A, facing Aguilas FC, DT Zorros NCFL, and Toros FC in the group stage. On the other hand, Azteca FC started in Group F against AFRO United, Coras, and Deportivo Lerma.
The title-winning goal was scored by Valencia's number 11, who capitalized on a rebound after a header struck the crossbar. The player executed a header that broke the deadlock in the match.
As a result, Valencia FC was crowned as champions in an excellent tournament that attracted 30,150 sports fans in Denver, setting a record compared to previous years. The winners took home a generous sum of ten thousand dollars.
Verizon is one of the five properties in the Alianza de Futbol Tour, including the Ford Copita Alianza, Alianza 5v5, ViX Alianza Femenil, and Allstate Sueño Alianza tournaments.
